IndieCade 2010 Finalist: Cargo Delivery by Cats in the Sky

Delivering cargo by sea can be a lot more fun than it sounds.

Case and point: IndieCade 2010 finalist Cargo Delivery by Brazilian developer, Cats in the Sky.

The premise of Cargo Delivery is simple: The little mariner Rufus wants a sailboat, but needs to earn some cash first by delivering cargo. Move cargo of different shapes, sizes, and compositions from the loading dock to the deck of your ship and sail safely to your destination. Each level presents the player with a set of cargo requirements to meet, such as a certain amount of a specific type of cargo, or a minimum weight requirement. The cargo is easily grabbed, rotated,  and (gently) dropped onto the ship’s deck, thanks to an elegant physics engine. Successful deliveries earn the player cash, which can be spent on things like ship upgrades or different types of ropes and chains that can be used to further secure your payload.

The full version of Cargo Delivery isn’t available for consumption yet, but Cats in the Sky released a playable, browser-based demo today for anyone to check out. The demo levels are a bit easy, but do give a good sense of the game’s personality, and what it’s all about. Cats in the Sky promises that later levels and special “challenge” levels have more teeth, and the game’s gorgeous art style is immediately engaging. It’s got the same kind of draw as titles like Gabriel Ochsenhofer’s Totem Destroyer, parts one and two, but feels like a more robust experience. It makes sense, since Ochsenhofer is now a member of the Cats in the Sky development team.

We can’t wait to get our hands on the full version of Cargo Delivery, which will debut at next month’s IndiCade 2010 festival in Culver City, California.
