SuperGiant Games Reveals ‘Bastion,’ Adds Kasavin as Creative Director

It’s a big day for SuperGiant Games!

The developer has released the first trailer and screenshots for their upcoming action-RPG, Bastion, and announced that Greg Kasavin, best known for his days as GameSpot’s Editor-in-Chief, has been brought on board as the company’s Creative Director. Kasavin also previously worked with SuperGiant’s co-founders Amir Rao and Gavin Simon on EA LA’s Command and Conquer games.

As you can tell from the trailer and screenshots, the vibrant, hand-painted HD backgrounds are very easy on the eyes. One of Bastion’s most unique features is a dynamic narrator who will react to the player’s actions in real-time while revealing a detailed back-story.

In Bastion, players are tasked with creating a safe haven in the aftermath of Calamity, an apocalyptic event that shattered the world into many islands. Exploration, customizable weapons, strange beasts, and “specially-brewed spirits” that grant special powers are all on tap.

“Our goal with Bastion is to hit players’ emotional chords in unexpected ways, in addition to delivering highly responsive gameplay that rewards finesse and experimentation,” said Kasavin. “We’re pushing to make it so that players become absorbed in the game’s distinctive setting and narrative tone from the first moments.”

Bastion is planned to be finished for digital-distribution in the summer of 2011, though specific platforms have yet to be revealed. The game will also be playable at PAX Prime in Seattle this week. A documentary video series called “Building the Bastion,” that chronicles the making of Bastion – from concept to finished product – will also air exclusively on GiantBomb, at some point in the future.
